Things to do in Vatican City
Vatican City may be the world’s smallest country, but it’s absolutely bursting with culture and history. Tucked away in the heart of Rome, it’s the centre of Catholicism, and the Pope’s official residence. From the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, every corner is packed with artistic and architectural marvels. The Vatican Museums are a maze of masterpieces, and the whole place has a vibe that’s both grand and deeply spiritual. Whether you're religious or just love a good view, it’s one of those places you’ve got to experience at least once.
Top three things to do in Vatican City
1. Check out St Peter's Basilica
It’s one of the biggest churches in the world, and the Renaissance architecture is just next-level. If you’re up for a bit of a climb, head to the top of the dome for sweeping views over Rome. Or, if you fancy something a bit more mysterious, pop down into the grottoes to see where many popes are buried. Oh, and don’t leave without seeing Michelangelo’s Pietà.
2. Explore the Vatican Museums
There’s something quite special about wandering through the Vatican Museums. With everything from Ancient Egyptian mummies to modern masterpieces – all gathered by popes over the centuries – there’s a great mix of both art and artefacts here. The Gallery of Maps is a real highlight, with beautifully detailed depictions of Italy, and the Raphael Rooms are a treat, especially knowing they were painted by the man himself.
3. Attend a Papal Audience
If you’re in Vatican City on a Wednesday, you might just catch a Papal Audience. It’s a chance to see the Pope in person and hear him share a few words with the crowd. You don’t have to be religious to find it interesting – it’s part of a centuries-old tradition and brings a real sense of occasion to the atmosphere. Tickets are free, but you’ll need to book ahead.
